Lumatone is an advanced and highly expressive MIDI controller. To use it, you connect it via MIDI to any device that generates sound. There are two types of cables you can use to connect Lumatone to your sound-generating devices:

  1. USB - Lumatone can send MIDI-Over-USB to your computer, which allows you o control virtual instruments, DAWs, and any other sound-generating applications on your computer. Lumatone sports two USB ports, so make sure you use the Type-B connector, which is square and not rectangular.
  2. MIDI 5-Pin DIN - If you have a MIDI interface on your computer, you can connect Lumatone via standard in and out 5-pin MIDI DIN cables. You can also use MIDI cables to connect directly to external instruments such as synthesizers and sound modules. When using MIDI 5-Pin Cables, be sure to connect the "in" and "out" cables to the correct ports on both Lumatone and your destination device.

For standard mappings that use 12 notes per octave, these connections will be all you need to use Lumatone with your devices.

If you are playing microtonal mappings, you can use these methods combined with tuning approaches in software. We discuss these approaches in other articles throughout this website.
